The one I have is strong enough to not need to be super close to the seedlings but it’s not strong enough to get a big plant to it’s full size and flower. LEDs stay cool and you can find them in different strengths. So you need to keep adjusting the height of the light. This is tricky because shop lights also get very hot and plants grow quickly. Shop lights will work too and they’re cheap but you have to keep the lights about an inch away from the top of the plants because they’re not very powerful. I have a square 35 watt LED light for my seedlings but long skinny lights would work great if you had a bunch of seedlings on a rectangular shelf. You don’t need a ton of light for just growing seedlings but you’ll see a ton of high powered light on Amazon for folks growing big bushy plants like pot indoors. Bottom line though, if you have a couple weeks to spare, you can get just as high of quality seedlings with the cheapest option. But I can get full size tomato seedlings in 6 weeks vs. The biggest difference is that the full spectrum will grow your seedlings faster. I used to use shop lights and have gone over to grow lights and full spectrum, higher powered units. The main thing about starting seedlings is that you need enough light power and full spectrum isn't that vital, but helps. Depends on the specs for the particular light. If you get into the higher powered / higher light quality realm like this, the height you keep these off the plants increases to 12-24 inches or even higher. It's a little more money, but if you want to bring a plant or two to bloom or fruit over the winter, it can do that for you also. That's got even higher quality light and will work quite well. There are other brands of similar price and quality, but this is the only one I am familiar with.ģ) Somebody here said they have a Mars Hydro TS600. Again, they'll need to be fairly close to the plants. ![]() I think these are a good bang for the buck if you want grow lights that are more full spectrum. These are more full spectrum and are available on Amazon. Lower them if the seedlings start to get leggy like you had before.Ģ) Barrina grow lights. Keep the lights about 4-6 inches off the tops of the plants. You need about 15-20 watts of LED power draw (not power equivalence) per square foot of seedling trays. Get something with a 5,000K or higher temp rating. Three tiers of types of light depending on how serious you want to get.ġ) Shop light. You also do not need, nor even want, the pretty purple/red lights. They advertise those 4 gooseneck purply/red lights as 80W when they're really 10W and couldn't grow 6 tomato seedlings. They often lie even in the specs so I can't even give you a guide on how to shop there. There is so much underpowered junk sold on there.
